Ritual House of the Diaspora

SAN MARIS BEGINS WITH AN OFFERING

Artisanal fragrance house rooted in memory, culture, and ritual.

Felt before it's understood.

the origin

This is not nostaglia.

It is continuation.

San Maris was founded by perfumer and candle maker Alicia Marie, whose work is shaped by Caribbean Heritage, lived ritual, and the quiet transmission of knowledge passed through generations.

Raised between tradition and modern life, Alicia Marie learned early that scent carries more than aroma // it carries memory, protection, and meaning. San Maris grew from understanding: a practice rooted in reverence, not replication.

A letter from the founder

Before this, I was a makeup artist in New York City. I was also a musician playing bass guitar, moving through sound, rhythm, late nights, and early mornings. New York sharpened me. It brought me closer to my heritage in ways I didn't expect. Living there taught me how deeply culture lives in the body // through music, through ritual, through scent.

When I began studying fragrance, something unexpected happened. Certain notes unlocked memories from my childhood, being beside my mother, surrounded by the quiet hum of botanicas, glass candles lit with intention, the scent of wax and yerbas (herbs) and something sacred I didn't yet have language for.

That moment changed everything.

San Maris was born from that remembering.

The first collection is devoted to the seven Orishas :: the sacred forces at the heart of Yoruba and Afro-Caribbean tradition. They were always present in the world I grew up in, even when I didn't have words for them. This collection is inspired by my mother, my grandmother, and the world they moved through. It is shaped by botanicas, by drums and dancing, by Dominican traditions that live in sound, movement, and spirit. These candles are not replicas of what already exists. They are my way of honoring that world while filling the space that felt missing :: something rooted, but more beautiful, more intentional, more quietly elevated.

This is where I began.

There is more to honor. More memory to follow. San Maris will go where the lineage leads // always with respect, curiosity, and care. The heart of the brand will remain the same: memory, culture, and the scent that carries us back to who we are.

This is an offering.

From my hands, and from my lineage, to you.

Mucho Besitos
Alicia Marie

The Seven

The first collection is devoted to the seven Orishas, the sacred forces at the heart of Yoruba and Afro-Caribbean tradition. Each candle is an offering to one.

Yemayá · Madre de Aguas

Mother of the ocean and all living things. She holds, she protects, she restores. Hers is the candle of rest, grief, cleansing, and renewal.

Oshún · Amo

Keeper of the rivers, of love, sweetness, and abundance. Hers is the candle of self-love, attraction, and everything that flows toward joy.

Elegguá · Caminos

Opener of roads, guardian of crossroads and beginnings. He is honored first. His is the candle of new paths, decisions, and doors.

Obatalá · Paloma

Keeper of wisdom, peace, and clarity. Dressed in white, he steadies what is shaken. His is the candle of reflection, prayer, and quiet restoration.

Changó · Rayos

Lord of thunder, fire, and rhythm. He arrives with power and leaves with celebration. His is the candle of strength, courage, and vitality.

Oyá · XXX

Bringer of winds and storms, guardian of transformation. She clears what no longer serves. Hers is the candle of change, release, and becoming.

Ogún · Sangre

Spirit of iron, labor, and the clearing of paths. He is the work and the will. His is the candle of perseverance, protection, and forward motion. (Coming soon.)

the invitation

These are not just candles.

They are gestures.

San Maris is for those who move through the world intuitively.

For homes that hold memory.

For moments that deserve intention.

White San Maris candle vessel honoring the tradition of Aché.

WHITE VESSELS & ACHÉ

The tradition of wearing white for spiritual balance.

Aché: spiritual power, life force.

Nothing here is rushed.

Nothing is accidental.

THE PRACTICE

Every San Maris candle is poured in small batches in California. We work with coconut apricot wax for a clean, refined burn, and carefully sourced fragrance oils chosen for depth and balance. Each piece is approached as an offering crafted with intention, patience, and respect for the materials.
